They are the world’s only mobility scooter formation display team. The eight ladies who make up the ‘Red Wheelies’ display team practice their latest routine in Canterbury, south-east England. Each of them suffers from multiple sclerosis, a debilitating condition that has limited their mobility. But they haven’t let MS stop them having a good time and raising positive awareness of their condition. Jackie Weeden is the group organizer, and tells how they started such a unique troupe back in 2003. [Jackie Weeden, Organizer]: “A group of us were waiting to take part in a race for charity and we were messing around on our scooters and I say we can have a formation display team and it sort of grew from there.” The team designs co-ordinated routines and performs them set to music. It’s as much fun for them as they hope it is inspirational for their fans. With over 15000 pounds raised so far for a new Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Canterbury, the ladies are preparing to take on their biggest challenge yet. They aim to complete a 240 km (150 mile) fundraising ride from the southern England city of Winchester all the way back to Canterbury.
