National Parks are for everyone to enjoy. We have many places and activities that have access for all, including visitors in wheelchairs, with young children or pushchairs, limited mobility or other disabilities.
The ADA Advocacy Team at IndependenceFirst raised funds to produce this TV spot to show people without disabilities how important it is to NOT use accessibile parking spots without proper hangtags or need. It uses a common scenario – kids inappropriately using their parent’s/other relative’s accessible parking hangtag to get a closer parking spot – to educate people that this is NOT a legal practice. Special thanks to the Milwaukee Police Department who helped in this PSA. This spot ran on television. Video shot by MATA.
First up, make sure all people can easily enter and get around your shop or business. Look at it from the perspective of parents with prams, larger people, wheelchair users, someone with a broken leg and anyone who has had a hip replacement. Is your floor slippery on rainy days? Are rubbish bins blocking the ramp? How wide are your aisles — could you get a pushchair through them? Make sure your accessible entrance is clearly identified with a sticker or sign so people can easily find their way into your business. If it’s too hard, or seems unsafe, many people will simply go elsewhere.
