There is a need for people of all abilities, including those with mobility, hearing, visual, and/or cognitive impairments as well as the aging, to access mainstream fitness equipment in public fitness centers. People with disabilities have the same social and health benefits of exercise as those without disability and have a right under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to access fitness equipment in public fitness centers. The Development of Uniform Standards for Accessible Fitness Equipment project team has worked closely with the UK Inclusive Fitness Initiative team to harmonize standards between the US and UK and to produce one set of uniform standards for accessible fitness equipment.
